The Hermitage was built in the 40's and was used as a dwelling part of its time by a hermit-like priest who ministered to the needs of others who visited the Shrine of St. Therese for Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Healing. After several years of remaining empty and suffering from the elements of weather and misuse, the Hermitage was painted and basic repairs were made. The work was done so that persons desiring a very simple but peaceful shelter could find such at the Shrine. The Hermitage has a table and chairs, two twin beds, and is heated with a wood stove. It is located just across Shrine Creek, nestled in the conifer and alder trees with a view that opens to the Inside Passage, the inland waters of the Pacific Ocean. A picnic table outside the Hermitage allows one to be in the natural setting with a comfortable place to sit as one listens to a Humpback Whale splash, an American Bald Eagle voice its majesty or a spawning salmon struggle to migrate up Shrine Creek. Individuals retreating at the Hermitage should realize that it is most rustic and its gift of comfort is not running water or an oil-fired heater or electricity. Rather, it is a very simple place to "come aside and to rest awhile" on the peace-filled grounds of the Shrine.
The Hermitage, like the rest of the facilities at the Shrine, is rented to individuals, married couples, families, or small recognized groups who intend in keeping with the Shrine Vision: Located in an area of exceptional beauty and solitude, the Shrine will be a place of spiritual refuge and retreat for the Diocese of Juneau, other religious groups, and when possible, for others utilizing it with reverence and care.
